Bogie Handling

BOGIE FRAME ROTATORS

Bogie frame rotators are designed to lift and rotate a bogie during maintenance and refurbishment, providing access to all areas in an ergonomic and safe manner.

They are fitted with rotating faceplates on the front of the lifting carriages and have modified feet to provide a wide and stable base. These rotators work in pairs, controlled from a single panel mounted at the rear of the master unit.

Electrically driven screws, bronze load and safety nuts provide the lift. The screws' non-reversing system supports the load at all times, whilst the load nut is fitted with an automatic lubricator and wear detector. Both jacks are synchronised to ensure each rises at the same rate.

The slave jack is mounted on guide rails to enable the fitting and removal of the bogie frame between the two units. The master jack is fixed to the floor using conventional studs.

BOGIE TURNTABLES

Mechan's bogie turntable is used to aid the transfer of bogies between roads within maintenance facilities.

It is normally fitted with double cross-rails to allow bogies to run across the surface and can be operated with either a manual push handle or electrically as required. A latch is fitted to the turntable to hold it in position when lined up with the workshop rails.

If the turntable is powered electrically, a gearbox is mounted in the pit. Drive is provided through a torque limiter to protect the gearbox from overload during operation.

The turntable can be designed to enable complete rail vehicles to roll over it at low speed. Heavy duty non-slip decking plates ensure forklift trucks and other equipment can also pass over it, whilst access is offered centrally for maintenance of the pivot bearings and slew drive.

Bogie turntables are constructed from heavy steel material grade S275 (EN10025) and the rails are welded to the main structure. The slew bearing comprises a central taper roller bearing to provide support and outer wheels that run on a steel track, bolted to the floor. The pit is cast in concrete to the specified size (by others), with latch pockets made to match the drop-in latch.
