NATIONAL COLLEGE FOR ADVANCED TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE (DONCASTER CAMPUS)

June 2, 2023

Top marks from college

When a local college required equipment to train the next generation of skilled rail workers, they didn’t have to travel far for inspiration…

The contract

During the construction of the National College for Advanced Transport and Infrastructure in Doncaster, Mechan was asked to supply a bespoke 30-tonne bogie press and set of eight 15-tonne lifting jacks to help educate students.

The equipment was installed during construction of the state-of-the-art campus, which opened in Autumn 2017 as the National College for High Speed Rail. Since then, budding rail maintenance workers have been given the chance to familiarise themselves with equipment they are likely to encounter in real depots.

They are able see first-hand how a bogie’s suspension is settled after maintenance, as the press mimics the loads imposed by a rail vehicle and how today’s longer trains can be raised with the lifting jacks for servicing without decoupling – saving valuable time.

The result

Andy Faulkner, the college’s senior engineering curriculum leader, said: “We are very pleased with our lifting jacks and bogie press. They enable us to show students the technology found in most rolling stock depots around the country.

“The equipment is easy to use and demonstrate, having been shown it as part of the installation and commissioning process by Mechan’s helpful engineers. Easy to follow operating instructions were also left with us. The firm has a great reputation for offering good aftersales and engineering support to the rail industry and we would have no hesitation in recommending its products to anyone.”
