Mechan is supplying two special jib cranes for installation at a massive liquefied petroleum gas terminal in the Persian Gulf.
Jib ArmMechan won the contract to build the cranes at its Sheffield plant through Scottish engineering group Weir. The two jib cranes will be erected on top of high-capacity LPG storage tanks.
The cranes were designed and fabricated by Mechan to ATEX explosion-proof outdoor specification. They will facilitate the periodic removal for maintenance and subsequent reinstatement of heavy LPG pumps supplied for the tanks by Weir LGE Process.
“We have extensive experience of supplying the oil and gas industries with specialist heavy handling and lifting equipment,” explains Mechan Managing Director Richard Carr. “This includes hose-handling apparatus that may comprise jib cranes, hoists and monorail systems.
“Past UK projects have included installations at Baglan Bay for BP Chemicals and Grangemouth for BP Oil. The capabilities of our pump-lifting jib and goliath cranes for LPG/LNG tanks have been established at several locations, including Gandhar and Dahej in
10t Jib CraneMechan equipment for oil and gas environments has all the proven safety characteristics necessary for operation in hazardous working areas. It may be air powered and designed as spark-proof as well as explosion-proof.
LNG/LPG pump-lifting cranes can deliver impressive height of lift. The hoist units can work with a conventional wire rope and hook or a special stainless steel retrieval rope permanently attached to the pump. An alternative configuration allows the crane to straddle the pump unit.
“Our involvement in this project has opened up the prospect of more work for Mechan in the Gulf region,” Richard Carr adds. “We envisage this including rail industry clients as well as the oil and gas industries. Our associated company Mechan Technology is already supplying two depot personnel protection systems for the Dubai Metro”.
“To make ourselves more visible and approachable in Iran and the wider Gulf region, we have just taken the step of appointing Mokarrar as our agent. This company joins a growing number of Mechan agents and distributors around the globe.”
Mechan has been designing, manufacturing and installing heavy-lifting equipment and control systems since 1969. End users include Siemens, BP, Bombardier and Rolls-Royce. Equipment for lifting trains, removal and handling of wheelsets and bogies, and depot personnel protection systems have been installed at traincare centres worldwide.
